week 10

            I feel this class overall was really interesting. I think putting in a blog was very good, because now after doing the readings you can share your feelings with what you thought and type whatever you are feeling. After posting it you can let everyone in the class see what you are talking about. And others can reply to how they feel about the situation or how they agree about what you are doing. I think having responses was a good think because now it forces the students to look at what people are talking about. And having them not respond to the same people all the time was a very important thing to me. Now you can see what everyone else was writing about, you can see others opinions on all the topics that we talked about in class.  In this class it has helped me to see how people reacted to not using the internet and how that affected all of us. It just shows how much we need this new technology in today’s world. The only thing I can think of that is bad about new technology is how people use it to a disadvantage. When wrote about technology, reading peoples blogs it showed just how lazy some people are getting. People would rather work from their bed these days then to get up and go out into the world and work. It is amazing to me.

            Although I feel that this class was very intriguing the only thing I would change about this class is that on certain days of the week read some ones blog that you do not agree with and find a counter argument to that. I feel that this would help people see both sides of what is actually going on. Then others will be able to decide how they feel about this topic. Everything about this class was I thought the time schedules worked and I also felt that the weekly homework made people actually read what is going on. In some classes you can get away with not reading any material. In class you actually had to sit down and go through all of the reading and write down what you thought about it and I really enjoy that part of this class.

            Learning about new technology and how it may have helped or may not have helped was fun. I did not even know that they had a class like this. Exploring all these new things you get find out just how much the internet takes up your entire day. Everyone I feel needs to have the internet for some reason, whether it was emailing a friend, or talking on myspace or facebook and paying bills. The internet has made everything in out lives a lot easier for that and that is why I feel today everyone has been hook on the internet. I feel this class has opened me up to learning a lot of different things about the internet. In my choice, after reviewing this class, I would actually like to stop using the internet as much as I do.

media story

I was just looking online at the Oregonian and I happen to see something about prostitution in south east Portland, Oregon.  The paper said that it is the most active place for prostitution in Oregon and it is funny because I have gone down the main streets in south east Portland. I have only seen couple of prostitutes there. It makes me wonder what is going on in that area. They showed in red dots of where most of these prostitutes have been working and I was shocked to see that it was all over the place.

                I think that finding this type of news online is helpful because not only does it mean it is on the internet were a bunch of people can  view it also means it has been in the paper and mostly on the news. So I feel that they are doing a good job of letting people know what exactly is going on. Especially in that area if people feel that it is not safe anymore for themselves or their children to go there then they know not to go around that area. On the internet it was giving information about some of the girls that had caught a couple times on these certain streets. It also was describing what the cops were going to try and do to prevent this problem from happening. Although I feel that it is very hard to prevent this problem from happening, the cops said that they patrol that area at night looking for specific things to help them put this to an end. In the article it also said that they are trying to make the streets a safe place and not have these women being exposed on the streets. And at the end they asked if you have any information on anyone doing prostitution to call the police.

                I think that this information was very helpful because in these days people are always online looking up stuff. Why not have these articles online so that people can beware of what is actually going down in their areas. We want people to feel that it is safe to going and do stuff I feel that giving this information out was a way that we could prevent this from happening.

                A way I thought that we could have people prevent this prostitution from happening is make the laws more strict than what they have been.  Make the consequences harsher than normal so when girl think about doing such things they will think twice about it. Or do what the article was actually talking about patrolling the areas where prostitution most frequent. Maybe these women would stop coming around. I just feel that getting the information out to people how they could would be positive because now these people are being exposed to everyone around them.   Therefore making these streets safer for others around them, because I have been around south east Portland and it is a nice area.

free write

I was texting my friend the other day and he was telling me a story that was not meant to be crazy. And it was just many paragraphs, it was really long. During all this I was not really saying anything just listening to what he had to say. And at the end he asked me if I was listening because I had not said anything to him.

            Now if I were in person while he was telling me this story, he would see the eye contact and know that I was actually listening and concerned about what was going on. In the text I was giving him really short responses. He thought that I was not interested in his story which changed his whole mood about the conversation. He actually got mad at me for not showing sympathy to a serious issue.

            Another issue was that my friend was telling me that he could not make it to my game this week. I replied “wow ok” and I do not think that he understood that I was actually mad at him. He thought that I was just saying ok that is the way it is going to be and that I did not mind. When we continued to talk, he was talking like nothing happened before that and when I was trying to show that I was mad he did not get the picture. I had to actually call him and tell him that I was annoyed he was not going. He has been my best friend for a long time and he kept telling me he was going to come to the game then all of the sudden he was not. If I was in person he would know that I was mad right away, but with technology he really did not know.

            Using technology is easier but at the same time it can be difficult to read some ones feelings or know exactly what they are talking about. Sometimes in texts messages or other ways of communicating online people does not get interpreted in the way you wanted to. And also other words can express different things; it is actually like a foreign language to others if you think about it. Talking on the phone or face-to-face you get some type of feel for the person. You just have a better understanding of how the person feels in a certain situation or learn more about them by their tone of voice. Most of the people I was talking to about this class said that they would prefer to talk on the phone or face-to-face then on text message because sometimes it can be difficult to talk to some one. They said if some one does not respond for awhile they tend to think that you do not want to talk to them but in fact they are actually been busy. So actually with all this new technology most people feel comfortable actually talking to people face-to-face because it is simple to read someone or it could be hard for some of them to be fake.

In this assignment I interviewed my friend who is 24. I asked him if he relies on the internet. He told me he can not live without the internet. He has Facebook, Myspace; he even is on a blog group. So his day is consistently around the computer and he is always checking them through the internet and his phone because now you can use the phone to get on the internet. So no matter where he is at he always has connection to the internet. He told that he lives around the internet and technology because it is easy access, it is quick, and they have reliable resources on their as well. In the interview he told me when he was little he did not think the internet was a big deal, even though he had it, it was not a big deal to him because they did not have many of the sites they have today. But today it has changed him completely he has a lab top that he takes with him to every class. He checks all of his ways of communication through the internet, pays his bills that way, and even check his bank account status to. He told everything is just easier to do with the internet.

            On the next interview I talked to my brother who is 36. He told me uses the internet, but for business purposes, emailing, and just surfing the net. He does not have Facebook and Myspace. He said growing up they never had any of this. No computer where you can send out emails and Aim, just a computer that you can type papers on and keep information on. This new era is something he likes he explained and said that it has changed his life, because now he use this to email his friends, look up his basketball stats because he is a big fan, and now he pay his bills online. He explained how technology is changing his life as whole for the better. Now people can get things done quicker, faster, and more efficient.

            My last interview was my grandma she is 78.  She lives with my mom and my grandma is actually not even allowed to go on the computer. My mom thinks that she will do something to mess it up because she has never used one before. My grandma said she likes to get on the phone and talk to her friends. She does not even know how to send an email or sing up and check her bank account. She said in her time they never had a computer besides a type writer, or the really old computers. My grandma does have a cell phone though and I have taught her plenty of times of how to use her phone, send text messages and check them, add people to her contacts and check voice messages but she always forgets and does not want to do that. I thought it was funny because she thinks that technology is good but it is not worth it for her because she has been without it for most of her life.

joining networks

           The discussion board I joined was the Lebron versus Kobe discussion board. My friend was actually in it and they have been doing this for sometime now. I feel that networks such as these are a waste of time. I mean having a group around the United States and talking about things you guys have in common or dislike. I feel those are things you can talk to your friends about or family.

            Being in this discussion board was actually interesting because they are some many people arguing about who is better Lebron or Kobe and each night you have people talking about the statistics they had the night before or why one is better than the other. I can see how this would be a good thing because gathering people around to communicate about the subjects they enjoy is another way showing how communication through internet has excelled. People now can make groups and send out emails asking to join their group and give out information about what their group is and what they believe in. So you can actually get a sense of what this person is actually like and if you fit into that style. A problem I have with this the freedom to make any type of group possible, people have made hate group networks, sexual groups, and others things. So there is a bad side to this but on the plus side most people get find others around the United States just like them and they communicate.

            In my discussion I actually saw some heated arguments. I was actually in one because I am a big Kobe fan, so I was talking about why Kobe was better and one person actually replied F*** Kobe. I definitely did not think that was needed at all. In this discussion board you see the two groups form. For example, a person will give stats of Lebron’s basketball game that night and then like three messages in row you will see people agreeing saying that he is better or his stats are crazy. After that people would respond saying why Kobe is better and three people would be talking about why he is better. I have notice that the arguments really get interesting. I notice one argument one person was talking about the others family.

            Now although this network brings people together to communicate it does not mean you know everything about this person. That is why really I never join these things because I feel there are a bunch a creeps and people who could be lying about who they are and what they do. I feel that these networks are also set up like an a dating service to because people will be attracted to those they have common interests with but if the person says he is somebody he is not that is a little bit scary. Basically I think these networks are not a very good place for people to go. That is why now you can put blockers on certain websites or have your computer monitored because you want to be safe from cyber crime.

Sources

I have often thought about what exactly teachers look for in credibility for papers. What makes a source a good source? I chose a paper that I had to write on in a communication class about divorces is in court and we had to make arguments to the opposing group who was against it.

            Now looking at the sources, I wanted to find ones that made sense and was a common place was the facts were correct. I have notice plenty times before that people of just go to Google and click on their topic without looking at what website it came from and just put in information that did not look knowledgeable to the topic. So looking at a paper I would actually want to know how much credibility this website actually has, what kind of facts they are trying to prove, and possibly who wrote on this website.  In this case, for this paper I would mainly go to the library because these sources are for the most part very credible. I would look what type of credibility the author would have, what type of things the author has won, what other critics have said about this author and go from there.

            The type of things I look for in sources would be fact that could help prove my opinion. I would not just want to cite something random that has absolutely nothing to do with what I am talking about that would make my paper less credible and the cite that I would be using. If I were to do grade some ones paper were the quotes made no sense, I would think that they source could have not been that good if that was what he was trying to come up with.

            In gathering valuable information I would make sure this cite would actually have to do with what I am trying to say in my paper. I want everything to flow in my paper and if I have information that is not valuable then it makes my paper look bad, my sources look bad, and the credibility of my paper would be bad. So valuable information I would look at something that would help prove my reason that would go back to my main topic which would go back to my thesis statement. I would want the information to flow with my paper. Also in looking for valuable information I would want to put things on there that most people did not know about my topic. I feel that valuable information helps if it is something that most people did not even know about your topic it would make the paper that more interesting when reading it. Which leads to engaging the reader, it would be boring if you just put down the basic information about the topic that people are know. In your paper the information is the key because credible sources help improving your paper. For me I think I would do a pretty good job at finding sources.

letters post 4

It was very interesting to do this activity. The people I chose were my brother who is 35 years old, he kind of acts like a father instead of a bother. So I usually do not talk to him like I would to my other brothers who are a year and a half apart from me.   The other person would be my Personal trainer that I have been working out with for a while in basketball.   We usually talk about a lot of stuff besides basketball he is a really good friend and trainer to me.

                In the first letter to my bother I wrote by pen. It was very interesting because he did not even write my back through email or responding with a letter. He actually called me when he got it and asked why I would send him a letter through the mail, instead of just picking up the phone and calling him. It is funny to me how everyone expects to do the easy way of the internet or new technology, which makes things go faster.  And as soon as something happens that is out of the ordinary my brother did not even know how to respond to me.  In this letter I actually used a lot of slang words with him. I know he is not used to that because for all of my life I have talked to him like he was my father. And in this letter I talked to him like he was one of my brothers that was a year and half apart from me. The funny thing was he asked me why did I write the letter like I did.  And I told him because he is my brother. He thought it was weird because he used to me respond with proper grammar and responding to him like he was my elder. After awhile of talking to him on the phone he really appreciated the way I talked to him and was glad I wrote the letter. I think he realized that he is my brother and not my dad and that I can talk to him in a different way.

                My personal trainer I wrote via email thanking him for all the things he has done for me in my life and opening doors for me that would have never happened without him.  He was actually fine with the email it did not caught him of guard or anything. I know he is used to getting emails but for me that has never happened. I usually call him on the phone and that is it. His response was normal and he was very thankful for the letter. He wrote me back saying thank you for being the person you and working so hard, and he said he not only helped me but I had also helped him by building new relationships with important people. I was glad that I wrote to him because I have never really thanked in a letter for all the special things he has done. And he was not surprised by the email either because he gets them all the time.

               

myspace

I can recall when I was in high school and everyone had gotten myspace. It was the start of something new. Communication took a a big leap for the new generation of kids. No parents could monirtor your conversation, and access to get to more than just one friend at once is a lot easier than using a phone or sending an email, or actually even talking them face to face. Myspace is also a tool for people who had lost connection with their friends and sometimes family. It could be something that you can use to find those peoples and works very well.

     Myspace gives you many adavantages because it is easier and quicker than more new technology. Many people use the internet all the time, like we discussed in the first post, it is easier for everyone to talk to others and more than just one friend at once. It  is almost the same as using facebook except myspace is more open to the public, anyone can get an account were as facebook you can not get on it unless you are in school, or at least that is how it use to be.

     Myspace not only lets you communicate with your friends but also lets you promote your interests to others as well. For example, if you were an music artist trying to get notice to the public many would make their songs or even their own music videos and post them on their myspace page and send out emails to others myspace page and promote themselves to get notice. That part of the network has been successful to many people trying to get notice for whatever they have been doing.

Myspace can also be a network for dating, find friendship and companionship. That part of myspace has worked for many people trying to find new friends. In this network people can find people who are just like them because on their profile post their likes and dislikes, and what they are looking for when communicating with other people. Myspaces has been many things to people. There have been people who do not do well  in communicating with others face to face but are on the internet all the time, they can communicate with others that have the same interests.

     Myspace has had many accessories that kids in this new age would help kids get out more and express their feelings towards other people. This new source of this communication has been something has helped people become more outgoing finding love ones or friendship and even jobs that they have been looking for. So actually think about what myspace is, is everything you need to it be. It is like a web page that has everything you want or need. I actually heard that they will be putting a thing on there similar to craigslist where you can actually sell things to your friends and other people. Myspace has become more than just a source of communication but something that help you with your life.

Facebook

I have had facebook for sometime now. And I have notice many things that have caught my attention while being on it. First would be the numerous of random people that send me emails, they always say I saw you play basketball on tv we should hangout sometime. To me that is one thing I dislike about the communication proccess on facebook. If you do not create privacy on your account anyone can facebook and talk to you and that is something I can control in this situation. Another point is that sometimes you do not want people to see what you write to others. So to handle that you send them a private message. I have found that I do this to most of my close friends that I often talk to. On facebook most of your friends post something on your wall all the time. I feel that most people are starting to use this commmunication more than they would than calling their friend on the phone. Since most people are spending their time on the internet they tend to check their facebook wall in the process. Now I have also notice that it is another way to show people what they have been doing over their weekend, night, or vacation by posting up many pictures of their friends and themselves having fun and you can actually comment on them on your own. Its another way to reminece about the night or time you had with this person. I have notice also that this communication system also works as a dating system. I have had friends who go on facebook and look up girls that they find attractive and basically talk to them  and try create relationships. Also when people look at your profile it tells them about yourself, so others can get a feel of how you are and if it is worth communicating to your not. In some since I feel that facebook is a tacky way of communicating to your others. I feel someone use it has a dating service or something that worthless.  I can understand why this communication has also been made into success because everyone is spending their free time on facebook so it works. I have also notice people on facebook while they are in class it just shows exactly how much people are attracted to facebook. You can talk to all your friends at once, it is way easier than sending a email and actually talking to them on the phone. And you can see their faces on facebook look at their pictures as if they were really there.  I think that facebook is also another communication that has been taking over in the new century. Now kids parents are getting facebook. I went to Jesuit high School and I have heard that the faculty actually creates one to monitor what exactly kids are doing outside of school (I think that is just crazy).  Facebook is a big hit for new communication.
